I just began posting all my fic on FanFiction.net. I’ve avoided doing so for over a year, being both wary of diving into such a huge pond and overwhelmed by the intricacies of the platform itself. There are all kinds of horror stories I’ve heard of anonymous flames and bizarre spamming attacking people who have posted there, and I just haven’t wanted to brave any of it before. But when I thought about it more, I realized that site was where I found fandom to begin with, years ago now, so it seemed like a nice, symbolic-circular reason to join in finally and be a part of it myself.
So having been a resident there for all of a few days, I’ve been surprised by a couple of things. There are a lot of people there. A lot. It’s rather jarring to see the hit count going up so immediately, but it’s a rush nonetheless. Secondly, some of my fics that have been less popular elsewhere seem to be going over better there and vice versa. Most interestingly though, I got a rather surprising review today, commending the fact that I 'took the time to write properly and not in “netspeak”'…
Being that I’m… old, and don’t even know netspeak, that was a rather unexpected bit of positive feedback, and definitely a first. But, hey, I’m open for any and all smileys anyone wants to throw at me. ;)
So I’ve finally decided to give this Tumblr thing a go… in the hopes that I will think of and find enough interesting things to post, repost, and pass on that it will be worth it. This set-up has been a pain in the ass, actually (I’ve actually been a freelance web designer, so I’m not tech-illiterate, and it took me a half-hour and three google searches just to figure out how to change that “Untitled” to my name), so I should make use of it in some way, if only out of spite. ;)
Stay tuned for things mostly Harry Potter-related, but possibly additionally writerly in some way.
